The benefits of accepting dogs

There are so many benefits to becoming dog-friendly, not just to a dog and their human, but also to your service.

We often receive feedback from dog-friendly services that dogs are social icebreakers. Their company and presence can be soothing and supportive for those around.

The presence of a dog can also help other people accessing your service. Some services have told us that having dogs around has helped other people in the service engage more.

"Having Bullseye in the building was very therapeutic for all the residents and staff. He was such a friendly dog with a waggy tail. Everyone loved him and looked forward to seeing him every day. Dogs Trust were a fantastic support."

Becoming dog-friendly is also important for services who are taking a trauma-informed, person-centred approach. For many dog owners experiencing homelessness, they will have experienced trauma and loss in their lives. Being asked to give up their dog can reinforce this.

For someone experiencing homelessness, their dog may be the only positive relationship they have in their life. By accepting dogs, you're helping to preserve this vital relationship.

When someone can access a service with their dog, it impacts and benefits two lives, not just one.
